THE FEAST

a novel by Juliana Lewis

Fireworks explode and trapeze artists do flips over dancing horses as the Feast makes her arrival. The ship’s maiden voyage was advertised months in advance, “Experience ocean; dominate ocean; let the Feast fancy YOU!” Though her route has yet to be revealed, the crowds of passengers buzz in anticipation. All have heard that there’s more to the journey than sunsets and ocean views. History will have been made, and they will have been part of its making.

The novel follows the Feast as she progresses across the Atlantic to surprise ports of call. The narrative alternates between the perspectives of the record-size ship—who takes on a vivid voice of her own—and the passengers traveling onboard, where multiple worlds co-exist, and eventually collide. There are the newlywed couples on the Romance Deck, the filthy children on Rumble, the less filthy children on Wholesome, and pleasure-seeking singles on Passion. Celebrities and multi-millionaires travel in suite-style cabins above the chaos on the passenger decks, while, down below water level, executives from the Feast Voyages Corporation run operations in a dictatorial fashion.

As the voyage progresses the plot takes a dark and surreal turn. Corporate greed turns violent; new marriages fall apart; crowds turn into mobs; the ocean vessel develops a voice of her own; and the ocean view becomes increasingly filled with ice.
